Principles of Tissue Viability is a web-based, part-time distance learning module, designed to develop and enhance your knowledge of all aspects of tissue viability.

Who is the module for?

This module is recommended for registered nurses, undergraduate nursing students, and allied health professionals, who have an interest in tissue viability.

  • Entrance requirements
    • Students must be a registered nurse, an undergraduate student nurse, doctor or an allied health professional or equivalent.
    • Students will require access to a PC (with Windows 95 or above) or a Mac; Minimal software required includes browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) e-mail, JAVA and Acrobat Reader packages.
    • Students must be able to navigate around their computer systems
    • Using NHS or work-based systems may prevent access to some web-based facilities due to protection within systems. Home access is recommended for this unit. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they have access to a fully functioning computer.

  • Objectives

    The module aims to:

    • To further develop reflective practitioners who will be able to assess, diagnose and plan care for patients with wounds
    • To enable practitioners to identify risk related to skin integrity and to develop and promote appropriate prevention strategies for skin breakdown
    • To facilitate development of practitioners who may independently search for, identify, critique, and use information related to their tissue viability related practice
    • To understand the processes that lead to skin and tissue breakdown and develop a plan to implement methods to prevent and treat skin breakdown
    • To be able to critically analyse patient information leading to improved outcomes
    • To identify risk related to skin integrity and to develop and promote appropriate prevention strategies for skin breakdown
    • To develop critical analytical skills to assist in decision making in practice, including assessment, diagnosis and care planning for patients with wounds
    • To use opportunities to make contact with other health care professionals and develop collaborative links potentially across the UK and beyond
    • To use electronic resources to find information and be able to apply to practice situations
  • Structure and content

    The module is divided into six theoretical learning units, which you may work through at your own pace:

    • Skin and Wound Healing
    • Wound Assessment
    • The wound healing continuum; assessment, measurement and documentation
    • Wound Infection
    • Diagnosis and investigations; infection and colonisation; wound cleansing; use of antimicrobials
    • Principles of Managing Wounds
    • Exudate, pain, devitalised tissue, odour, hypergranulation, debridement
    • Managing Complex Wounds
    • Leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, malignant wounds
    • Wound Products i.e. dressings, Topical Negative Pressure (TNP), larvae therapy

    Online support will be provided by the module co-ordinator and supported by contact with other students through discussion boards and chat rooms during the semester.

  • Delivery and assessment

    All essential course materials will be web-based.

    Students are recommended to obtain textbooks for their private use to supplement the course materials but the module will be predominantly journal based and an electronic essential reading list is available. There is no obligation or requirement to purchase any books.

    Your assessments are part of the learning process and are intended to draw attention to important aspects of the subject. Much of the necessary background material will be found in the text associated with the Units, the activities or the resource area of Canvas.

    There are two areas of assessment:

    • Critical analysis of learning (3,000 words);
    • Online multiple-choice examination.
