The Mentor Preparation Module is designed to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards to support learning and assessment in practice, Stage 2 (Mentor) (NMC 2008).

It has also been mapped against:

  • NHS Education for Scotland (NES) National Approach to Mentor Preparation for Nurses and Midwives Core Curriculum Framework (NES 2007)
  • NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF) core dimensions (Scottish Executive 2004).

The module includes learning in both academic and practice settings. Registered Nurses who satisfactorily complete the module will be added to the Service Provider local register of mentors or University Non-NHS Register (NMC Circular 28/2007).

The module also provides the background for mentors to progress to becoming sign-off mentors, though additional experience (and a record of that experience) will be needed to attain sign-off status.

For Midwives, the additional criteria for sign-off mentor must be met before being added to the local register.

  • Entrance requirements

    You must:

    • Be a registered nurse/midwife and currently in practice;
    • Work with a pre-registration student;
    • Have a supervisor who is a mentor (sign-off mentor for midwifery);
    • Have the support of your clinical manager;
    • Have developed your own knowledge, skills and competence beyond registration; i.e. you should have been registered for at least one year.
  • Objectives

    This module will enable mentors of student nurses and midwives to:

    • Utilise a robust evidence base to enable the development of a learner-centred approach to facilitating and creating an effective learning environment;
    • Enable mentor development in relation to facilitating learning and professional growth, acting as a resource and directly managing learning in practice to ensure public protection;
    • Assess learner performance in practice and recognise your accountability for their decision to pass, refer or fail a learner.
    • Ensure that the student mentor experience can be satisfactorily mapped to the NMC Mentor Domains/Outcomes;
    • Demonstrate in the Portfolio and assignments clear evidence linking knowledge and mentoring practice.
  • Structure and content

    This module will involve:

    • Three face-to-face taught days; one at the beginning of the module, one about 3 to 4 weeks in, and one at about 9 to 10 weeks. The teaching will be a mixture of lectures, workshops and seminars;
    • Five days, or 37½ hours, in practice over three months where specific mentoring activity needs to be completed, under supervision;
    • Two self-study days. This is to allow time for link activities between the taught days and the practice days, including documenting activity in the Portfolio of Evidence;
    • The support of a supervisor who is also a mentor;
    • Access to Practice Education Facilitator and Module Tutor for both student mentor and the supervisor;
    • Satisfactory completion of a Portfolio of Evidence to map module experience against the Domains/Outcomes of the Standards (NMC 2006)
    • Please note that the 3 face-to-face taught days and 2 self-study days are compulsory.
  • Delivery and assessment

    You must provide sufficient evidence to demonstrate that you have met all NMC mentor domain outcomes. This may be evidenced through the use of completed theoretical and practice activities forms and other forms of evidence as noted within Types of Evidence.

    The overall word count of your evidence must be 2,500 words.

    Three study days on campus - 15th May, 12th June, 10th July
