Module overview

This CPD module is from our MSc Advancing Practice course.

This module is designed to enable practitioners at the forefront of care to develop essential knowledge and skills for an interprofessional approach to the assessment and care of individuals experiencing mental health issues, whether in isolation or alongside physical health problems.

Students will develop their knowledge of mental health conditions, mental health non-emergency and emergency assessment, care approaches, legislation and national policies. At a practical level the module will teach practitioners to recognise, assess and care for mental health within every day practice, as well as formulate a collaborative plan of care with the appropriate professionals and services.

The module can be completed as a single credit based module. Alternatively, it may be used as credit towards the MSc Advancing Practice.

Modules will be offered subject to demand and need to meet a minimum class size of eight students.

Students who have completed a previous degree or Masters studies are eligible to apply.

This module will be of interest to nurses, allied health professionals, social workers or managers working in primary and secondary care or the voluntary sector.

Those who may have responsibility for setting up or running a service or who have a case load of patients with long term conditions, inclusive of those with chronic disease and multiple morbidity, can also benefit from this in-depth module.

English Language requirements

If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of your proficiency (minimum IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 577/233/90)

A flexible payment scheme is operated by the University for students who are self-funding.

Completion of the module provides the opportunity to attain the Learning Outcomes:

  • Critically review a range of mental health issues which present alongside physical conditions, or independently, and develop an understanding of theories which underpin person centred care.
  • Demonstrate critical knowledge and skills to fulfil the process of a mental health assessment, clinical judgement and decision making, including in an emergency.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of therapeutic approaches that support people experiencing mental health issues and facilitate personal outcomes of care.
  • Critically reflect on policy, legislation, professional roles, and models of interprofessional care which enhance services and actively involves the person, their families, carers and wider partners.

The module is delivered in four units to encourage students to build their knowledge, think critically and explore current issues and research into mental health care approaches. Students will be enabled to reflect upon experiences and areas for development within their practice, and to advance this when working with patients and families.

This module is taught entirely online using a wide range of web-based resources, such as films, blogs, research studies, guidelines and policies, online tutorials and discussion forums offering a flexible approach to teaching and learning.

The module is assessed by students carrying out a case study related to their practice and the topic.
