Pre-course reading list

The main textbook for the core modules will be:

  • Genetti, C. (ed.) (2014) How Languages Work: An Introduction to Language and Linguistics, published by Cambridge University Press

It would be a good idea to get hold of this as soon as you can, before semester starts.

If you want to do some background reading before the course starts, some of the popular science books about language are a good place to begin:

  • Guy Deutscher (Through the Language Glass, The Unfolding of Language)
  • Steven Pinker (The Language Instinct, How the Mind Works)
  • Jean Aitchison (The Articulate Mammal, Words in the Mind, Language Change: Progress or Decay)
  • David Crystal (Cambridge Encyclopaedias, Words Words Words, The Fight for English)
