BA (Hons) History and Sociology

Home country: Sweden

Growing up in a peaceful larger village near Stockholm, Sweden, I thought it would be a bit of an adventure to study abroad and decided to move to Scotland. It has been an enjoyable experience and after completing a joint BA (Hons) in History and Sociology, I decided to stay for another year to do a MSc. I like the cultural experience of studying abroad, but I particularly enjoy the opportunities to get out and explore different places in Scotland as a visitor while taking photos and making memories, so living here is a bit like being on holiday all the time.

While studying a wide variety of historical periods and topics as an undergraduate, I discovered an interest in historical landscapes and environments. In sociology, on the other hand, I developed an interest in social issues and identity. Doing the ‘Environment, Heritage and Policy’ MSc is a chance to explore all these topics together and to gain a variety of skills. I find it interesting to learn about both the positive and negative effects of heritage on people and places and to think about how people’s interaction with history might change in the future. As part of the course, I currently have the opportunity to do a project with the Library of Innerpeffray, putting together an exhibition about the battle of Bannockburn. The exhibition will give people the chance to see how the books of the Library tell the story of this famous battle, as well as showing the links between Innerpeffray itself and this legendary historical event.
