I joined the Division of History and Politics in 2016 from Bilkent University, Ankara in Turkey, having completed my DPhil in International Relations at the University of Sussex. My research interests include Marxist Historical Sociology of International Relations, Political Ecology and Global Political Economy. My work explores the “Geo-Political Ecology of the Middle East”. Starting from a critique of conventional notions of resource scarcity and abundance as environmentally deterministic and orientalist in style, this research proposes a careful historicisation of the geo-political, postcolonial and political economic conditions for social-environmental transformations. It explores the conditions of possibility within which developmental states emerged as the main arbiters of society-nature relations. I am currently working on a co-authored book manuscript comparing the ‘Divided Environments’ of Israel-Palestine, Cyprus, Sudan and Syria.
