Biological and Environmental Sciences research

Our research and impacts positions us as a leading institution in the area of environmental protection and biological conservation.

We seek to understand the fundamental processes driving the evolution and maintenance of biodiversity, from the molecular to the ecosystem level. We look at how environments and ecosystems have changed over annual to millennial timescales to predict and mitigate the future impacts of anthropogenic change and natural hazards.

We have a unique focus on the relationships between people and the environment and our research findings are used to inform policy makers and practitioners in conservation and environmental regulation, planning and management.

Our staff are involved in many international projects around the world, including Malaysia, Botswana, Nigeria, Iceland, Norway, Greenland, Ukraine and Hungary

We have around 40 PhD students supported by 24 academic staff, many of whom are experts on national and international bodies, 12 technical staff, and excellent field, laboratory and computing research facilities.

We consistently attract major research grant support from the Natural Environment Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, theLeverhulme Trust, charitable trusts and industrial sponsors.

Working with conservation

We host the Scottish office of the British Trust for Ornithology - an independent scientific research trust investigating the populations, movements and ecology of British wild birds. ‌We also have close links with the RSPB.

The Bumblebee Conservation Trust was started by staff within Biological and Environmental Sciences and is now based in a nearby Innovation Park.
