Researching human behaviour, technology and the natural world

Our cross-disciplinary research tackles global challenges in issues such as food security, behaviour and evolution, digital economies and biodiversity.

We’re internationally renowned for our natural science research that explores the complex interrelationships between human behaviours, technologies, and biological, environmental and aquatic systems.

We influence government policy and tackle real problems affecting industry and society. Our students benefit from our research which updates our teaching in key areas such as Sustainable Aquaculture, Health, Breeding and Genetics, Welfare and Behaviour, and Nutrition.

We’ve an open and friendly science community, and we’re continuing to invest in our research centres and activities.

Aquaculture

We’re home to the world-renowned Institute of Aquaculture – a leading international centre in the field and the largest of its kind in the world. The Institute brings together world-class, cross-disciplinary researchers to find solutions to global challenges in food security and sustainability.

Biological and Environmental Sciences

We’re world leaders in biological and environmental research. We seek to understand the fundamental processes driving the evolution and maintenance of biodiversity – from how environments and ecosystems have changed over time, to predicting and mitigating the future impacts of anthropogenic change and natural hazards.

We’re involved with many international projects around the world, including in Malaysia, Botswana, Nigeria, Iceland, Norway, Greenland, Ukraine, Hungary and China.

Computing Science and Mathematics

We develop and deploy new computational and mathematical approaches to tackle complex real-world problems. Our research explores the interfaces between computer science, mathematics, life and health sciences, as well as management, finance and social sciences.

Psychology

We bring together complementary perspectives to address fundamental psychological questions, with activities falling under three main themes:

  • Behaviour and Evolution
  • Centre for Health and Behaviour Change
  • Cognition in Complex Environments

We’ve key societal impact in areas such as improving face recognition, welfare of captive animals, and human health and wellbeing.
