Women in Coaching

Dr. Justine Allen, Programme Director MSc Sports Coaching, has worked with Scottish Hockey’s Coach Education Development Manager, Colleen Reid, to develop the Aberdeen Asset Management Women in Coaching Programme.

The programme was developed from research conducted with hockey coaches. It’s designed to promote coaching as a role for women in hockey. It includes:

  • Providing opportunities for women to engage in coaching courses and further professional development.
  • Developing strategies to encourage women coaches to become qualified in leading training sessions.
  • Actively promoting women coaching in adult and performance environments.
  • Providing on-going development opportunities for coaches working within children and youth environments.

Management for Football Managers—the Scottish Football Association

To be licensed to manage at the top level of football throughout Europe, you must have completed your UEFA Pro-Licence. As one part of the SFA's Pro-Licence Programme, we provide a residential workshop for aspiring managers.

The focus of our workshop is on applied management theory and practice. We aim to help football managers, and those who wish to become managers, to better understand the business side of football. We’ll equip you with the skills and techniques needed for day-to-day football club management.

We use interactive learning, and develop your skills through role plays, simulation and video techniques.

Being on the Pro licence allowed me to touch on the business side of management. I was never interested in that when I was in the job – I never really looked at the big picture. I was too busy trying to concentrate on the football. The Pro licence has been superb in terms of making me look at things more in-depth. I think if I do get back in I will be so much better prepared on that side of things

Alex Rae, former Manager Dundee.

The workshop at Stirling was a really interesting aspect to the UEFA Pro Licence and really got me thinking outside the box away from the usual football talk. It was important to start talking about the boardroom aspect and get experience of those matters. ... Everyone can see how football has changed and understanding the financial side is more important than ever, with new rules such as financial fair play. As a manager, you have to understand that. The course at the University of Stirling was a great addition to the qualification and really worthwhile

David Weir, Assistant Manager, Brentford.
