The population is getting older. Changing demography and increasing longevity suggest that older people will continue to be among the chief recipients of health service provision – over two thirds of acute general NHS hospital beds are occupied by people aged 65 years or older (NMC, 2009).
Combined with comorbidities, or co-existing conditions, the provision of care, support and advice for older people requires greater understanding of the complexity of health and social care needs that older people can present with.
This module aims to enable professionals and practitioners to develop a broad knowledge base and to enhance skills and advice in caring and supporting older people living with illness.
