Post-diagnostic support for people with a learning disability and dementia

This evidence based course is designed to increase the knowledge and confidence of staff supporting people with a learning disability and dementia

The fee includes: Jenny's Diary booklet and postcards, USB stick with information, activities, handouts and organisational templates for future planning.

Breakfast, lunch and refreshments are provided.

The course will be running in November 2018 from 9:30am - 4:30pm, date to be confirmed. Booking will open in July 2018. 

  • Objectives

    Those attending will be supported to:

    • recognise the impact of dementia among groups experiencing marginalisation
    • recognise health inequalities among people ageing with a learning disability and plan how their organisation will support this population
    • debate current practice in supporting people with a learning disability and dementia and identify potential complicating factors, for example over-medication
    • take part in practical activities that identify appropriate and individualised non-drug support for people with a learning disability and dementia, and demonstrate how to safely implement such support in practice
    • recognise the importance of a rights-based approach to supporting people with a learning disability and dementia that ensures individuals participate meaningfully in decisions about their care, service (re)design and the support they are receiving.
  • Structure and content

    This one-day course is delivered at the Skilled level of the Promoting Excellence Framework, Scotland. 

    Content includes:

    • awareness of how dementia may affect people with a learning disability
    • safe implementation of non-drug supports for people with a learning disability and dementia
    • rights-based approach to providing support
    • planning ahead as an organisation to support an ageing population of people with a learning disability
    • practical examples and exercises
