By the end of this module you will have worked remotely with a small team of other students to produce a research proposal for review by a panel of senior researchers.

This module will give you experience of working in a research team and with a dedicated mentor. You will be matched to a placement that suits your interests and needs. You will identify learning goals and will be involved in the detailed planning of the bespoke placement experience.

Mentors are leading health researchers and research teams are often undertaking cutting edge research in the field, nationally and internationally. Previous students have undertaken work with the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals Research Unit, the Cancer Care Research Centre, the Centre for Public Health and Population Health and the Maternal and Child Health and the Enhancing Self-Care and Self Management Research Programme.

Students have worked with addictions researchers in Vancouver, on service evaluation in Stornoway and for the Chief Scientist Office Scotland. They have been involved in systematic and scoping reviews, interviewing, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, pilot studies, ethics committee meetings and drafting proposals and original papers for publication.

This is a highly valuable opportunity to consolidate existing skills or try something completely different. The modules can be taken stand-alone or as part of a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MRes helping to develop transferable skills that will last well beyond the module itself.

  • Objectives

    This module aims to provide an opportunity for you to undertake a practice placement in a health research setting of their choice. It aims to provide an individualised, flexible opportunity to gain invaluable experience in the field of health research.

    This module aims to:

    • Develop an advanced awareness of the need for different methodological approaches to be taken to address specific research questions;
    • Outline the principles of the health research process including the legal/regulatory and ethical responsibilities of researchers, project management and document control;
    • Provide an opportunity for students working in teams remotely to design and plan a health research project including identifying costs, issues of research governance, dissemination and knowledge exchange;
    • Provide opportunities for students to fully appreciate the collaborative, interdisciplinary and networking dimensions and skills essential to contemporary health care research;
    • Promote a critical understanding of the involvement of various stakeholders, including patients/service users, carers and families, in healthcare research, and ways that this involvement can best be supported.
  • Delivery and assessment

    All teaching and learning will be placement based. Locations vary and remote/online working is also possible.

    The assignments for this module involve a placement plan and a reflective report on the placement experience based on a research diary.

    NURP009 and NURP010 involve a 15 day placement that can be either completed in a block of time or spread across one semester

    The majority of our students are already working in health or social care prior to commencement and remain employed throughout the duration of their studies.

    Our students develop a wide range of transferable skills during their study that make them attractive to other employers e.g.

    team working;

    • IT skills;
    • literature searching;
    • critical appraisal;
    • presentation skills;
    • writing and data analysis.

    Career opportunities

    The MRes Health Research is designed for students who wish to pursue a variety of different careers in health where research is a core component. Students wish to make a contribution to applied research in a range of contemporary health and social contexts.

    Most of our students are employed as health professionals whilst they study part-time with us. When they complete their studies most students will stay in their clinical speciality but use their enhanced research skills/knowledge in their roles e.g. by conducting their own research or service evaluations.

    Some students wish to use their Masters study as preparation for a PhD. Our students have been very successful in gaining recognition for their research work and for winning funding for PhD study.

    Industry connections

    The MRes team consists of experienced health professionals and social scientists. Through their work they collaborate with various national and international bodies.
