The Health Research Dissertation module is the key applied element of the MRes in Health Research and prepares and supports students to develop and apply research skills and knowledge. The Health Research Dissertation module complements and further develops other modules in the programme specifically building on elements previously taught to allow integration and consolidation.

The focus of the research funding proposal assignment is effective planning and preparation to undertake good quality health research. Navigating relevant systems of funding is a central aspect of current day health research. The focus of the systematic review assignment is developing skills in designing and conducting good quality evidence synthesis. The programme team expects students to be able to create a proposal or systematic review that will stand them in good stead for furthering their health research career when completing the MRes programme.

  • Entrance requirements

    The student should have completed, or be in the process of completing, all other Masters in Research modules.

  • Objectives

    The module aims to:

    • Enable students to advance their understanding and knowledge of the fundamentals of academic research work in the health sector
    • Develop knowledge and skills to enable students to undertake advanced research activities that mirror, as far as possible, an academic environment and the skills required in contemporary health research
    • Build the confidence of students to undertake research activities, both under supervision and independently
    • Provide opportunities for academic debate and challenge in a supportive environment
    • Provide supervision and support through academic mentoring and peer-based approaches to guide the dissertation process.

    On completion of the module, students will be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in health research, as applied to applied research activities, in the form of a dissertation.

  • Delivery and assessment

    There are two assignment options for the dissertation:

    • Development of a research funding proposal


    • Conducting a systematic literature review

    Part way through the module there will be a formative submission.

    The student is supported in the fundamental and practical aspects of health research in developing either an original research funding proposal, including in-depth discussion of ethical issues, or a systematic review. Students are encouraged to embrace academic debate and scrutiny in a supported environment thereby preparing them for the rigours of health research in practice.

    Both assignment options have a word count of up to 15,000 words including appendices and references.

    The majority of our students are already working in health or social care prior to commencement and remain employed throughout the duration of their studies.

    Our students develop a wide range of transferable skills during their study that make them attractive to other employers e.g.

    team working;

    • IT skills;
    • literature searching;
    • critical appraisal;
    • presentation skills;
    • writing and data analysis.

    Industry connections

    The MRes team consists of experienced health professionals and social scientists. Through their work they collaborate with various national and international bodies.

    Career opportunities

    The MRes Health Research is designed for students who wish to pursue a variety of different careers in health where research is a core component. Students wish to make a contribution to applied research in a range of contemporary health and social contexts.

    Most of our students are employed as health professionals whilst they study part-time with us. When they complete their studies most students will stay in their clinical speciality but use their enhanced research skills/knowledge in their roles e.g. by conducting their own research or service evaluations.

    Some students wish to use their Masters study as preparation for a PhD. Our students have been very successful in gaining recognition for their research work and for winning funding for PhD study.
