The Records of the Parliaments of Scotland to 1707

The Records of the Parliaments of Scotland to 1707 (RPS) is a fully
searchable database containing the proceedings of the Scottish parliament from the first surviving act of 1235 to the union of 1707. The culmination of over ten years’ work by researchers from the Scottish Parliament Project based in the School of History at the University of St Andrews, the online edition seeks to make this key historical source freely available to all in a technologically advanced and user-friendly format.

The inclusion of new parliaments and conventions of estates, committee records, parliamentary minutes and additional material makes the online edition the most comprehensive record of Scottish parliamentary proceedings ever available.

Dr. Alastair Mann (co-editor - pictured) demonstrated the Records of the Parliaments of Scotland at a web resource showcase in Philadelphia at the SHARP (Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing) in July 2013.

Lest Scotland Forgets

The Centre supports Lest Scotland Forgets: Recording Scotland’s Great War Memorials, a History project designed to catalogue, map and analyse the choice and design all of Scotland’s Great War memorials – not just parish monuments but all forms of commemoration, from public buildings to charitable funds – as well as to engage schools and other local groups in the historical investigation of the individual stories of those whose names are recorded on World War One memorials. A key aim of the project is to create (by 2018) a digital catalogue of all forms of memorialisation of Scotland’s contribution to the Great War (1914-8).

The Scottish Parliament: History workshop

This Scottish Parliament history website offers an introduction to the pre-1707 parliament of Scotland by Dr. Atair Mann. It is based initially on a paper entitled ‘From Pomp to Policy: The Parliament of Scotland in History and on CD-ROM’ given in May 2000, but now updated with the launch of the online Records of the Parliament of Scotland to 1707 of which Dr Mann is co-editor (see above), and the start of the final year special subject module at the University of Stirling entitled, ‘The "Golden Age" of the Scottish Parliament: parliament and politics in Scotland, 1660-1707' (module code HIS9Y7).

The website and accompanying workshops are intended to provide some core information and suggestions for research possibilities on topics related to the pre-Union (1707) Scottish parliament. The level is aimed at both High School Higher pupils and first year undergraduate students, but provides a useful introduction to the general reader and more advanced student.
