Pre-conference visit to the Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh

Price: Free

Date and time: Tuesday, 8 January 2019, 6-8pm

Join us at the visit to the Scottish Parliament, which will include a tour of the Parliament and its permanent exhibition, a reception sponsored by Joan McAlpine MSP and a welcome address by Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs in the Scottish Government. The Scottish Parliament celebrates its 20th anniversary which closely speaks to our conference theme.

Pre-conference screening of If…

Price: Free

Date and time: Tuesday, 8 January 2019, 6-8pm

On the eve of the conference, we will screen Lindsay Anderson’s If…. (1968), which will mark the film’s 50th anniversary accompanied by an exhibition curated by Stirling Archives. The film will be introduced by Prof John Izod, principal investigator on Lindsay Anderson AHRC-funded project.

Wake Up with Wallace!

Only the brave start the conference in an active spirit. Join us for a walk to the iconic Wallace Monument, situated in a proximity of Stirling Campus and offering stunning views of Stirling and its surroundings.

Pub Quiz

A test of your wits and general knowledge.  Join us for an evening of fun at The Meadow Park bar, situated just outside of the Stirling Campus.

Whisky Tasting

Price: £10

Date and time: Thursday, 10 January, 5:45-6:45pm

A tasting of a selection of single malts delivered by Stirling’s Woodwinters.  The whiskies will be from some of the most highly regarded distilleries and in some cases will be unique single cask bottling’s that will never be repeated. This is a great opportunity for complete beginners to gain an understanding of Scottish single malts and enjoy some unique flavours; and for whisky connoisseurs to taste some utterly unique single cask whiskies.

Conference Dinner and Traditional Scottish Ceilidh

Date and time: Thursday, 10 January, 7:30-11:30pm

The highlight of the social programme, dinner at the Stirling Court hotel followed by an evening of traditional Scottish Ceilidh dancing.  Grab a partner and enjoy some great music, played by the Dollarfield Band.

Stirling Listening and Viewing Stations

Venue: Conservatory, Stirling Court Hotel

Listening and Viewing stations (prepared by Suzy Angus and Janieann McCracken) showcase excellent work of Stirling production staff and students. They include a selection of audio stories from the radio drama module featuring collaborations in audio and animation, a research-based audio documentary, focusing on the ways that social and personal reality are mediated through documentary, and experimental sound narratives, looking at memory, legacy and cultural resonance. These works are in part linked to the University’s 50th anniversary and to the Division's 40th anniversary celebrations. The delegates can listen to or watch these works at their own leisure during the conference.

University of Stirling Archive

The University of Stirling Archive holds a number of collections which may be of interest to delegates, including collections relating to John Grierson, Lindsay Anderson, Forsyth Hardy, Norman McLaren, the Musicians’ Union, Scottish Newspaper Society, Scottish Political Archive and various sports collections (for more info see libguides.stir.ac.uk/archives). If you are interested in visiting the archive, please email archives@stir.ac.uk in advance to arrange an appointment. During the conference, delegates are also encouraged to visit the current exhibition of material from the Musician’s Union Archive, on display in the University Library.
