Stewart Scotland short course

This all-inclusive five day course will retrace the steps of Scotland’s Renaissance monarchs including James IV, Mary, Queen of Scots and James VI, and explore the kingdom ruled over by the Stewart Dynasty from 1371 to the Union of the Crowns in 1603. The course will be complemented by outstanding gourmet food and drink experiences.

Brief itinerary

Day 1 – Introductory drinks and dinner (evening)

  • Welcome drinks, presentation and Q&A with your course leader

Day 2 – First among equals? The early Stewart Kings, 1371 – 1424

  • Bothwell Castle
  • Doune Castle

Day 3 – I have thus slain a tyrant! Crown and nobility, 1424 – 1488

  • Linlithgow Palace and St Michael’s Church
  • Blackness Castle and the Kelpies

Day 4 – The glory of princely governing. Scotland’s Renaissance monarchs

  • Abbey of Cambuskenneth
  • Church of the Holy Rude, Stirling and a walking tour of Stirling Old Town
  • Stirling Castle

Day 5 – Reform and revolution, 1513-1560

  • Abbey and palace of Dunfermline.
  • Burntisland Parish Church,
  • Culross Abbey, Palace and Town

  • Lochleven Castle
