Born in Edinburgh in 1930, Richard Demarco is a Scottish artist and promoter of the visual and performing arts. He co-founded the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh in 1963, and went on to found the Richard Demarco Gallery (1966-92). He had a formative influence on the art collection at the University of Stirling, and in 2008 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the arts in Scotland. In 1971 he was commissioned to make some sketches of the new University of Stirling campus, two of which survive in the Art Collection.
