Born in London in 1936, Patrick Caulfield studied at the Chelsea School of Art (1956-60) and then the Royal College of Art (1960-63) and then went back to Chelsea School of Art to teach (1963-71). A reticent man, he remained wary of being identified with any movement but came to be associated with Pop art chiefly through his participation in the New Generation exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, in 1964.
