Born in Glencoe, Iain McColl trained at Sunderland Art School (1972-3) and Glasgow School of Art (1973-76). He occupies studios at the Glasgow Sculpture Studios; Argyll; and in Eire, producing kinetic sculptures, lightworks and video installation.
The sculpture, also known as the 'Blue Boy', is situated in front of the Pathfoot building. It was commissioned by the University in memory of Dr. Tom Cottrell, first Principal. Selected from a shortlist of three, the sculpture celebrates the pursuit of knowledge.
