Black Lace
(Gouache on watercolour paper, 1951)

Anne Redpath grew up in the Scottish Borders and enrolled in Edinburgh College of Art in 1913, graduating from ECA with a travelling scholarship which was to take her to Brussels, Bruges, Paris and Italy. She then moved to France where she lived with her husband James Michie but she returned periodically with her sons and brought back paintings which were shown at the annual exhibitions. In 1934, she returned to Hawick, later living in Edinburgh, and was president of the Scottish Society of Women Artists (1944 -1947). The Royal Scottish Academy admitted her as an associate in 1947, and in 1952, she became the first woman Academician. Her sons David and Alastair Michie also became artists.

This artwork was part of the Scottish Arts Council bequest.
