Introduction

Regulatory framework

1. These regulations form one element of the Regulatory Framework of the University of Stirling. The framework includes:

  • Ordinances
  • Other Academic Regulations
  • Codes of Practice
  • Policies and Standards
  • Degree Programme Tables
  • Module Descriptors
  • Definition of Terms

2. These regulations apply to all categories of undergraduate student at the University, except where the Academic Council has qualified them through agreements with third parties such as a Memorandum of Agreement, a Memorandum of Understanding, a collaborative agreement, or a joint venture.

3. In order to meet professional, regulatory or accreditation requirements, the general regulations are qualified for some individual programmes of study. Details of exceptions are provided at the end of these regulations.

4. Through programme handbooks and module descriptors, faculties operate guidelines and procedures which supplement these regulations; however, these regulations take precedence.

5. Some programmes of study are governed by additional requirements defined by professional, regulatory or accreditation bodies. Further details can be found in the relevant programme handbook.

6. The University operates a modular credit accumulation system, based on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). The degree programme tables incorporated into these regulations, and associated modules, are defined in terms of SCQF.

Regulation changes

7. Academic Council has the authority to vary these regulations at its discretion. Authority is delegated to the Education and Student Experience Committee (ESEC) which annually approves the regulations for the new academic year.

8. Authority to apply exceptions to regulations for individual students is delegated to the Academic Panel, a sub-group of the Education and Student Experience Committee. The relevant code of practice will stipulate any instances where Academic Panel has delegated authority to faculties or to Academic Registry.

Academic appeal

9. A student has the right to submit an academic appeal on any aspect of these regulations in line with the code of practice for Academic Appeals.
