Moelwyn Merchant (1913-1997)

Growing Form

Born in Port Talbot, Wales, Moelwyn Merchant was an academic, novelist, sculptor, poet and Anglican priest. As an academic, he is best known for his widely-used editions of Shakespeare, and he taught at Universities in Wales, Exeter and Chicago. He later became Canon and Chancellor of Salisbury Cathedral, before returning to Wales. Merchant published a number of books of poetry and took to sculpture relatively late in life, but did so successfully. He was strongly influenced by his close friend Barbara Hepworth. He had numerous solo shows.

Growing Form was gifted by the artist through the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in 1993. It can be seen in the Pathfoot Dining Hall.
