Elizabeth Blackadder DBE, RA, RSA

Venice Window
(Oil on canvas, 1950s)

Born in Falkirk in 1931, Elizabeth Blackadder studied at Edinburgh College of Art (1949-54) under Robert Henderson Blyth and William Gillies. After being awarded travelling scholarships to southern Europe and Italy, she married artist and fellow Scottish Gallery exhibitor John Houston in 1956 and began teaching at Edinburgh, retiring in 1986. She is perhaps best know for her detailed yet lyrical watercolours of flowers, 'table-top' compositions using Oriental objects, and her beloved cats.

In 2012 the University held a major exhibition of Elizabeth Blackadder's and John Houston's work in conjunction with The Park Gallery, Falkirk. A catalogue published at that time is still available in the Crush Hall, or online.
