In-Sessional English

In-Sessional English is delivered by INTO University of Stirling to help you achieve your full potential in your academic subject. The purpose of the English support that we offer is to bridge the gap between general English and the academic English needed to succeed in UK university life.

These classes are for all non-native speakers of English with priority being given to those for whom classes are specifically recommended. Students who met but did not exceed the University’s minimum English language requirement will have these classes timetabled for them. Any other students wishing to attend these classes should email isp@stir.ac.uk with the following information:

  • Name
  • Student number
  • Degree Programme

There are five In-Sessional Support classes each semester and are designed to develop the Language skills necessary to improve your overall performance in your University courses. Each In-Sessional two hour class will have practice in the four key skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing within an Academic context.

Skills covered on the course will include:

  • Reading: Skimming, scanning and reading for gist.  Inferring meaning of unknown words.  Distinguishing between fact and opinion.
  • Writing: Using cohesive devices to create concise and coherent work.  Paraphrasing, summarising and referencing.
  • Speaking: Effective participation in seminars and tutorials.  Using stress, intonation and signposting for affect.
  • Listening: Identifying main points and supporting details.  Developing effective note taking strategies.
  • General Academic Skills: Time management, Critical thinking, Independent learning strategies.

Each block will begin with a needs analysis and there will be formative assessment throughout.  Each class builds on and develops from previous sessions and will include an end of block report.
