Induction to social work BA (Hons) September 2017 (dates/times and schedule  TBC, room TBC)

We very much look forward to meeting our new students during their induction programme in September, they will be joining a highly regarded social work education programme which is delivered by a committed and experienced team of enthusiastic academic staff who are all social work qualified and maintain strong links with practice. 

Programme Induction

Our induction programme introduces students to the staff team and to practitioners and service users who will be involved in their 4-year programme.  Most of our staff team contribute to the induction for BA (Hons) Social Work students and student can expect to hear from the subject group leader and from the teaching team who are always happy to share experiences about their backgrounds and expertise during the induction programme. 

Social work students are provided with information about the programme they are studying, they will be provided with access to online resources and the VLE (Succeed) and will get to meet their personal tutors. The personal tutor plays a key role in supporting students during their academic and fieldwork studies and we encourage students to arrange regular meetings during their first few weeks on the programme. 

Support, Feedback and Representation

As well as providing an overview of the core social work modules the induction programme will cover wider learning and support available to students who are coming to Stirling: student support services, library and information services as well as the Student Union and an introduction to the School Officer for social work. The induction programme will also involve student being made aware of their responsibilities and the processes for communicating with their tutor, module coordinators and important information about the preparation and submission of their academic and practice-based coursework. 

We encourage ongoing feedback from our social work students through several mechanisms: Staff/Student Liaison Committee, module evaluation questionnaires and via the social work course representatives. The induction programme includes the opportunity for students who wish to represent their peers to nominate themselves for these important roles.

Learning and Teaching

Social work learning and teaching strategies are varied and include role play, workshops, service user and practitioner led taught sessions, online activities, as well as traditional lecture style, reading groups , assessed interviews and peer-led social media learning groups. The induction programme includes all of these in taster sessions. Students will be encouraged to begin to develop their Personal/Professional Development Programmes (PDP)  during the induction programme identifying their own personal learning needs and targets. 

Scottish Social Services Council

Social work students have to be registered with the Scottish Social Services Council and  so part of the induction programme will involve discussion about the professional codes of conduct and values which social workers are expected to demonstrate and contributions from colleagues who work in SSSC( we can add a link to this). 


Teaching schedules and timetables are normally available before the induction programme begins, and we go through these in some detail to ensure that students are fully aware of expectations for their attendance and the academic requirements for assessed work.
