Carnegie-Cameron Taught Postgraduate Bursaries 2013-14

The University of Stirling has been allocated four Carnegie-Cameron Taught Postgraduate Bursaries for academic year 2013/14.

Regulations

Carnegie-Cameron Taught Postgraduate Bursaries are awarded for the payment of tuition fees for one-year taught postgraduate Masters courses offered by a Scottish university.

The value of a Bursary for 2013-14 will be £3,750. If the course fees are under £3,750 the Trust will pay the lower fee amount. If the course fees exceed £3,750, the Trust will only cover fees up to £3,750.

Eligibility and selection criteria for applicants

1. To be eligible, applicants must:

  • be of Scottish birth OR
  • be of Scottish extraction (have at least one parent born in Scotland) OR
  • have been resident in Scotland for a period of at least three years for the purpose of secondary or tertiary education

2. Candidates will be selected on the basis of their merit and promise, and of their financial circumstances.

3. The most important selection criteria should be those envisaged by Andrew Carnegie: that the candidates be qualified and deserving, industrious and ambitious, and that they would derive particular benefit from a one-year taught postgraduate degree, which they would be unlikely to attend without the award.

Eligibility criteria for taught Masters

4. Bursaries must support taught postgraduate Masters that will enhance students’ employability in their chosen field, develop their specialist skills, or supplement existing ones, thus bettering their career prospects. The Bursaries should not be considered as a stepping stone for further study at PhD level and preference will be given to candidates with a clear career plan outside academia.

5. One-year taught postgraduate courses may be attended on a part-time basis over two consecutive years.

6. Bursaries that have been allocated to a university, but not awarded to any student, will be cancelled, unless the university can award the bursaries to students starting later in the academic year (January for example).

7. Bursaries

  • can only be awarded before students start the course
  • are not intended for courses awarding a certificate or a diploma

8. Should a student withdraw from the Masters programme during the academic year, any resulting balance or reimbursement due on fees must be repaid by the university to the Carnegie Trust.

Application process

Download the Carnegie Cameron Bursary Application Form. Applications should be submitted, either in hard copy or by email attachment, to the Head of Student Administration. Those submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

Applicants must already have been offered and accepted a place to study on a postgraduate taught programme at the University of Stirling in order to be considered, and must meet their conditions of offer in full before the award of a bursary can be confirmed.

Deadline

28 June 2013

Institutional innovation and the housing pathways of young householders on Scottish Hebridean Islands

This is a 3-year research award from the ESRC DTC, commencing in October 2013. A criterion for receipt of this award is to have Masters level social science research training from

  • Either a MSc in social science research methods
  • Or another Masters qualification together with appropriate research experience.

Supervisors: Dr Madhu Satsangi and Professor Douglas Robertson, in collaboration with the Rural Housing Service.

Research summary: This research will critically examine the applicability of the’ housing pathway’ concept to the housing opportunities and decisions of young householders on Scottish Hebridean islands. These opportunities will be examined in light of the research evidence that the islands comprise particularly constrained rural housing markets and with specific reference to Our Island Home, a three-year programme of innovations in housing supply for young islanders (http://www.ruralhousingscotland.org/Rural_Housing_Service/Our_Island_Home.html). The research will make a new contribution to the literature through its focus on neo-feudal, island environments. The research methods will include documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews and invite innovation in data gathering techniques from young islanders participating in this housing supply innovation. It is anticipated that the research will be communicated to academic audiences via conference presentations and refereed journal submissions. Further, the research has direct policy/practice outcomes as it allows the project partners, the Rural Housing Service, a means of reflexive engagement through providing an independent commentary on project implementation. As a consequence, it is anticipated that dissemination will also engage with a wider policy and practice audience.

ESRC has residential criteria for awards, shown at http://www.esrc.ac.uk/funding-and-guidance/guidance/postgraduates/prospective-students/eligibility/index.aspx

Your covering letter should show that you meet the research training and residential criteria.

The student will be expected to undertake field work on the Scottish Hebridean islands.

Deadline: Closing Date: May 17th, 2013

How to apply: Applications should include a covering letter, a full CV and a 500 word summary research proposal. The proposal will be assessed for candidates’:

  • Awareness of relevant research literature
  • Capacity for rigour and creativity in the design of research methods

Risk and Resilience in Scottish Charities

This is a four-year “1+3” research award from the ESRC DTC, commencing in October 2013. A criterion for receipt of this award is to have at least a 2:1 honours degree in a related discipline, with an interest in both quantitative and qualitative methods.

Availability

Risk is an everyday part of charitable activity. Charity trustees are responsible for managing risk so that their charities achieve their objectives and protect charities' funds and assets. In Scotland, the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) has responsibility for implementing The Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005.

This PhD project will focus on the ways in which "risk" is dealt with by the regulator, and experienced by charities. It will explore the extent to which charity data could be used to measure risk, to predict negative outcomes, and it will test the extent to which these measures are an accurate reflection of the qualitative risk within the charity.

The project will build on literatures within an inter-disciplinary literature on non-profit governance, volunteering, risk and organisational resilience. There is a large literature exploring the factors that contribute to organisations being well run. The move in this literature from prescriptive "good practice" to studying empirically how nonprofit organisations and the volunteers running them operate suggests that it is important to study both the regulator's definitions of risk and how this is operationalized in charities themselves. OSCR is concerned with identifying the early warning signs of risk to charities and charitable assets. This PhD project will use a mixed-methods approach, studying both the regulator and individual charities, to bridge this gap, contributing to the development of robust risk measures while testing the extent to which they capture the underlying processes within charities in different situations.

Deadline: 17th May, 2013

How to apply: ESRC has residential criteria for awards, shown at http://www.esrc.ac.uk/funding-and-guidance/guidance/postgraduates/prospective-students/eligibility/index.aspx.

Successful applicants will be expected to undertake the MSc or MRes in Applied Social Research at the University of Stirling in their first year. Applicants with an appropriate Masters degree may be able to enter directly into the PhD.

Your covering letter should show that you meet the qualification and residential criteria.
Applications should include a covering letter, a full CV, two references (at least one of which should be an academic reference), and a 500 word summary research proposal. The proposal will be assessed for candidates’:

  • Awareness of relevant research literature
  • Familiarity with quantitative research methods
  • Familiarity with qualitative research methods
  • Interest in the topic area.

ESRC PhD Studentship

Behaviour change in action: understanding agency and contextualised interaction in benefit recipients’ encounters with street level advisers

Supervisors:  Dr Sharon Wright and Professor Isobel Anderson

Deadline: 31 May, 2013

Research summary:  This PhD studentship is designed to advance in-depth understandings of benefit recipients’ behaviour as lived experience.  Recognising that a person’s subjective reality involves being influenced and influencing others simultaneously, the study will examine the ways in which agency is experienced and exercised by benefit recipients within an intersubjective context. The focus is on investigating dynamic processes of interaction, tracking benefit recipients as they negotiate advice encounters with a range of street-level bureaucrats. The methods are ethnographic, including qualitative interviewing of benefit recipients and, where possible, the advisers they interact with. The intention is to observe directly the advice encounters of research participants, offering a distinct methodology capable of generating authentic insights into the interpersonal dynamics of conditionality in practice.  This innovative project will build on two main bodies of work. First, it contributes to studies of agency in social policy, which have highlighted the importance of context in influencing motivation, choice and action. Second, it draws on the newly re-invigorated field of street-level bureaucracy studies, which focuses on the implementation of policy in its enacted form to understand the tensions experienced by front-line welfare advisers in their daily work. In relation to both types of research participant – benefit recipients and advisers – the focus is on understanding their interpretations of agency as lived experience.

Research questions:

  • How are behavioural change/conditionality measures experienced and accomplished in practice?
  • What are users’ experiences of conditionality and how are these shaped by processes of interaction and in relation to interdependencies?
  • How do front-line advisers view conditionality as lived experience in their working lives?
  • How do processes of intersubjective interaction bring conditionality into being?

The studentship

  • This is a 36 month studentship, commencing in October 2013 and finishing in September 2016.  It will provide a stipend per annum (£13,726 in 2013-2014) plus tuition fees.
  • The studentship is funded by the ESRC and linked to the project ‘Sanctions, Support and Behaviour Change:  Understanding the Role and Impact of Welfare Conditionality’.  It will be supported by the ESRC Scottish Graduate School of Social Science.
  • Applicants are expected to have an Upper Second or First Class undergraduate degree in a social science, or related, subject and must have completed recognised ESRC research training or equivalent in social policy, sociology, economics or a related discipline.
  • ESRC studentships are open to UK residents on a +3, full-time basis only – for information on eligibility see: http://www.esrc.ac.uk/_images/PFG_DTC_(June_2011)_tcm8-14766.pdf
