About me

I graduated in 1973 with a Mathematics degree from the University of Edinburgh before training as a secondary school teacher at Moray House. I then had a 25-year career in Scottish schools, ultimately as a Deputy Head. This was followed by a two-year placement in Ghana, West Africa, as a volunteer with VSO, training Maths teachers. After taking an MSc in Information Technology at the University of Stirling, I am now a part-time Teaching Fellow.

My main teaching responsibilities are in first and second year, covering Calculus and Analysis, and I also set and supervise problems for our final year Research Portfolio module. I contribute to the department's Public Lecture series and this has led to my offering workshops in the Royal Institution Masterclass series for schoolchildren in Stirling and Aberdeen. I have also repeated the lectures at Scottish Mathematical Challenge prizegivings in Stirling and Dundee, the SMC Conference and the Aberdeen and Strathearn Science Festivals. Titles so far have included "To Infinity and Beyond", "Squares, square roots and Pythagoras", "Keeping Secrets" and "Counting on the fingers of one hand", together with joint lectures about Alan Turing and John Napier.
