My main research is in Management History and Strategic Management. Currently I am looking into the following three areas:
1.Evolution of governance structures in large businesses in emerging market, particularly in India, during 20th century. Specific issues include: factors (internal and external) that influenced its development; professionalization; comparing and contrasting structures used by Indian firms with those used by Western businesses to identify and understand ways in that these differ.
2. Evolution of management education in emerging economies, particular in India; role of large businesses and management academies in shaping its development.
3. Understanding the strategic response of firms during the period of 'industrial decline' in Britain- using the case of the Dundee jute industry. This interest follows from my doctoral thesis where I examined the strategic response of manufacturing firms in the Dundee Jute Industry to increasing international competition and challenges faced by them in the process between 1880 and1970. It draws on the capabilities framework to study how individual firms used their resources to formulate strategic response and barriers they faced in the process.
