Dr Emma France

NMAHP Research Unit 13 Scion House University of Stirling Stirling FK9 4LA United Kingdom

About me

I joined the unit in March 2012 as a lecturer. My research focuses on families and health. I specialise in qualitative research methods but also have expertise in quantitative and mixed methods approaches.

I studied psychology and French at the University of Glasgow where I was awarded a PhD in psychology in 2000. Following this, I worked for seven years as a researcher and project manager in the commercial and voluntary sectors including for a mental health service provider, a design consultancy, and a telecommunications company.

From April 2007-March 2012, I was employed as a research fellow at the Universities of Stirling and Edinburgh on a study funded by the National Institute for Health Research Service Delivery and Organisation programme: ‘Information for choice: what people need, prefer and use'. Subsequently, I worked on the Scottish School of Primary Care funded ‘MALT' (Scottish Multiple And Long Term Conditions) study to develop a national cohort study of people with multiple morbidity and on a qualitative study of men's and women's experiences of stroke before joining the NMAHP Unit.

Research skills & expertise: qualitative research - thematic and framework analysis, narrative analysis, qualitative secondary analysis, qualitative evidence synthesis, visual and projective methods, focus groups, in-depth interviews, using NVIVO software; systematic reviewing; quantitative methods - experimental design, parametric and non-parametric statistics, questionnaire design
