Prediction of morphological adjustment and societal response to channel instability resulting from increased flood frequency in Scotland
Funded by Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH).
My PhD aims to examine the effect that increased flood frequency from predicted climatic change will have on morphology of river channels and how best to manage these changes in light of the Water Framework Directive which aims to maintain the good ecological status of rivers. The specific objectives of the project are to: (i) identify channel reaches that will be most sensitive to channel change and nature of that change under future flood scenarios (ii) assess the changes in gravel fluxes in different Scottish river types under future flood scenarios (iii) look at ways in which society can adjust to the predicted changes in channel morphology and (v) prepare management strategies for landowners on how to best manage the morphology changes in the river in terms of land-use and nature conservation.
