Marie is a doctoral candidate at the Behavioural Science Centre of the University of Stirling and a resident academic at the University of Malta. She graduated in Commerce (First Class) then in Economics (First Class) from the University of Malta and, as a Chevening Scholar, completed a Master of Science in Environmental and Resource Economics at University College London in 1994 (with Distinction). Her current research interest focuses on the determinants of voluntary pro-environmental behaviour and she has recently presented her research (on recycling in the presence of financial disincentives) at the Society for the Advancement of Behavioural Economics.
Prior to returning to academia, Marie held various senior civil service positions, including within the Malta Environmental and Planning Authority, where she oversaw the implementation of EU environmental legislation in Malta and some 80 projects funded by international bodies. She represented Malta on the EU Commission’s Environmental Policy Review Group, the Environmental Communications Network, the Environmental Economics Network, the Environment Council, and the European Environmental Agency Management Board. Marie was also the National Focal point for the UNFCCC and has worked on assignment for UNEP, the EU and environmental ministries in various EU candidate countries. In her earlier post-graduate work, Marie headed the Planning Authority’s Public Participation Unit. She was the team manager responsible for Research and Information for the Structure Plan review and also co-ordinated socio-economic reviews in Environmental Impact Assessment.
Following several years as a Senior Visiting Lecturer at the University of Malta, Marie accepted a full-time post within the Economics Department of the University of Malta in 2011 where she now lectures in Environmental Economics and Behavioural Economics. She also lectures on Social Marketing within the Marketing Department, on European Union Environmental Economics within the Institute for European Studies and guest-lectures in various other Faculties. Marie forms part of the board of the Institute of Public Administration and Management, and various other committees and projects including Malta’s European City of Culture initiative. She conducts several outreach and knowledge-transfer initiatives, including training courses for Continued Professional Development with a number of constituted bodies.
Marie is also an award-winning television producer, screen-writer and presenter and her extensive body of work has been aired in Malta (TVM), Italy (Rai), France (Arte) and Germany (RBB). Her audio-visual projects, focusing on socio-political issues, have won several prizes and awards including 3 Broadcasting Awards, the WWF Malta Green Media Personality award, the European Gold Star Award for Active Citizenship, the Kreattiv funds and the Malta Film Fund.
Marie lives in Gharghur, Malta with her husband and daughter.
