Access for the public

Any member of the local community is welcome to use the library for reference purposes. No formal application is required except for access to the special collections. The Library has an access control system so please call at Reception on entry to the Library.  If you wish to borrow, this can be done by joining the library as an External reader. Please ask at the Lending Services desk at the Information Centre.

Access for students from other universities

Students from other universities may use the library for reference purposes. No formal application is required except for access to the special collections.  Stirling is a member of the SCONUL Access scheme so if your home institution is a member, you can apply online for a SCONUL Access authorisation email which you can bring to our Library to authorise you borrowing rights with us.  See our basic advice on how to apply to SCONUL Access.  If your institution is not a member you can join the library as an External reader. Please see 'Joining' below.

Access for staff from other universities

Staff from other HE institutions can apply for a SCONUL Access card from your home library. This will permit borrowing at our Library. Please bring your SCONUL Access card to our Lending Services Desk.

Stirling Alumni

Alumni of Stirling University are entitled to join the Library under the same conditions as External members. The annual membership cost is halved to £15.  See the section 'Joining as an external member' below.

Corporate membership

Corporate membership is available to organisations at an annual fee of £70.  Contact Lending Services on 01786 466620 (select option 1 for Library then option 1 for Lending) or email circ@stir.ac.uk for further information.

Joining as an external member

External readers who wish to borrow may do so on payment of an annual subscription of £30 (£15 to Stirling University Graduates). The fee is waived for those with SCONUL Access membership cards, for sixth year school pupils and Forth Valley College students.

External readers are entitled to borrow 10 items from library stock (excluding short loan items and during semester, popular loan items). Access to our online databases and electronic journals is not permissible due to licensing restrictions.

To join as an external member, please complete the form below and then come to the Lending Desk within the library to pay your fee and collect your library card.
