How long can I keep a book?

There are 3 main loan types:

  • Popular loan – 1 week loan
  • Long loan – 4 week loan
  • Short loan- 3 hours or 24 hours

>Print journals are not loanable
>Some items are held in store – there will be a link in the catalogue record for you to request retrieval of an item from store.

How many books can I take out?

All staff and students are entitled to borrow 10 items from the Popular Loan collection plus 4 Short Loan Collection items. There is no limit on the number of Long Loan items that can be borrowed.

How do I renew my loans?

You can:

  • phone the Lending desk on 01786 466620 (pick 1 for Library then 1 for Lending desk)

How do I place a hold?

Holds can be placed on books which are out on loan (or on new books that have just arrived in the Library but are not yet on the shelf). When books are returned (or become available to borrow) they are placed on a trolley in the Short Loan area. You will then be notified that you can collect the booked item.

How to Place a Hold

  • Find book in Library catalogue
  • Click on the book title to view the full book details
  • Click on 'Request/Hold' button
  • Login to your library record
  • If there is more than one copy, select the item you wish to place a hold on
  • Log out of your record by clicking on 'log out' at the top right of the screen
  • You will receive an email when the book is available for you to collect
  • Books can be collected from the trolley in the Short Loan area (Level 2 of Library) marked "Reserved Items for Collection". The book will have a slip with the first four letters of your surname and the last four digits of your student/staff number.

If you place a hold on a long loan item, the current borrower will be asked to return the book within 1 week.

If the item is located in Short Loan Collection use Short Loan Collection Bookings.

How do I book a short loan item?

You can book Short Loan items for a specific date and time. You can take out 4 Short Loan items at a time.

Yes, we have to ensure that the library stock is returned in a timely fashion. Read about fines.

How do I request items from store?

Theses and some other items are held in store so cannot be retrieved immediately by library users.  If an item is in store, you should see a link in the catalogue record to 'request from Stirling store'. Click this and a request will be sent to the Lending desk.  They will retrieve the item from store (usually the same or next day) and you will be emailed that the item is ready for you.  Some reference items such as theses cannot be borrowed but we can keep the item at the desk for as long as you need to use it for consultation in the Library. External users can request theses from store by using this form:
