It’s not just on the field of play where the University of Stirling will be represented at Glasgow 2014. Many of our students, staff and graduates are playing key roles in delivering a successful Commonwealth Games. Below is a selection of case studies.
Senior Teaching Fellow Alan Lynn is managing a programme developed to help prepare
Scotland’s next generation of Commonwealth Games athletes and coaches. Alan, course director for the MSc Performance Coaching at Stirling and a former Scottish Swimming Technical Director, is leading mentoring programme Achieve 2014.
Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) and Search Consultancy – Glasgow 2014’s official recruitment agency – identified more than 80 athletes and coaches from 20 Commonwealth Games sports. The athletes and coaches are given an exclusive behind-the-scenes experience of Glasgow 2014, led by experienced mentors and the programme aims to prepare them for the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa, the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in St Lucia and the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast.
Alan said: “There is a wealth of sporting talent in Scotland and it’s crucial that promising young athletes are inspired and motivated, and given every opportunity to succeed. The group we have selected are already equipped with sporting skills and determination. ‘Achieve 2014’ will harness this and propel them onto even greater heights in the future.”
BA (Hons) Film & Media graduate Gavin Sturgeon will be at the heart of the sporting action – working as the Glasgow 2014 official film-maker. Since graduating in 2006, Gavin has been working as a producer and director specialising in sport and documentary production.
And in his ‘dream role’ with the Organising Committee, Gavin has been capturing all the Games preparations, covering everything from the transformation of Hampden Park into an athletics venue to the Queen’s Baton’s Relay.
“My time on the Film and Media Studies course was simply invaluable,” said Gavin. “The combination of film theory and practical workshops from media practitioners who continued to play an active role in the media was crucial for establishing a firm theoretical base with real-world skills that allowed me to enter the workplace in the best shape possible.”
As part of her position as Senior Policy, Planning and Governance Officer, Jill Stevenson manages the University’s equality and diversity agenda, ensuring Stirling’s activities comply with the 2010 Equality Act. Jill is also Director of Equality on the Board of Scottish governing body of sport triathlonscotland, overseeing the strategic implications of the equality and diversity agenda and legislation on triathlon in Scotland.
Putting all this experience into the Games, Jill is currently seconded to Glasgow 2014 where she is the Accessibility & Inclusion Manager. With the aim of delivering a Commonwealth Games that is truly inclusive and accessible, Jill provides strategic leadership and direction for accessibility and inclusion issues.
She said: “I can’t wait to see the impact of our work in making Glasgow more accessible, ensuring that people with accessibility requirements are not only able to fully experience and enjoy the Games, but also to enjoy the great facilities that Glasgow has to offer long after the Games is over. Improvements to the accessibility of the city arising from the Commonwealth Games will benefit everyone who experiences them, and I feel so privileged and proud to be a part of that.”
