St Andrew's Cathedral, Inverness

Congratulations on your forthcoming graduation. We hope that you and your family will enjoy your graduation ceremony and reception, and advise that you read the information below thoroughly in advance.

Countdown to graduation

Read the drop-down sections below for important information about what you need to do before you graduate and what happens on your graduation day.

Additional ceremony tickets
Additional guest tickets for the graduation ceremony have now sold out, but tickets for the graduation reception are still available (see below).

Graduation reception tickets
We are delighted to inform you that we  have tickets available for the graduation reception only. Though this does not allow access to the ceremony it does provide an opportunity for any additional guests to join you for the graduation reception. These graduation reception tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis from noon on Monday 2 October 2017 until supplies are exhausted, or until midnight on Thursday 26 October 2017, whichever comes first. These tickets will be available to purchase online via the University’s online shop at a cost of £10 per person.

Deadline to order academic dress
Graduands should order their academic dress through Ede and Ravenscroft by 5pm on Monday 30 October. Please see the section below for further information on academic dress and photography.

Invitation to Graduation

How do I register to graduate?

We will send an e-invitation to your University email address and you should complete the online invitation as soon as possible. During the invitation process you will be able to choose from three options:

  1. Graduate in person on the date you have been offered
  2. Graduate in person at a later date
  3. Graduate in absentia

When is the deadline to register?

The deadline will be specified in your invitation email.

What happens if I don’t receive an invitation?

If you are potentially eligible or are eligible to graduate at the forthcoming graduation ceremony in November 2017, an invitation to graduate will be sent to your University email account.

If you do not receive an email and are expecting to graduate, please contact the Timetabling, Exams and Graduation team at ask@stir.ac.uk.

What happens if I forget to register?

The University aims to accommodate all students who wish to graduate, but only in exceptional circumstances will applications be considered after the invitation closes. If you are late but still wish to graduate, please contact the Timetabling, Exams and Graduation team immediately on 01786 467059 or ask@stir.ac.uk.

What happens if I don’t wish to attend the graduation ceremony?

You may choose to graduate in absentia.  In this case, you would not attend the graduation ceremony or graduate in person. Your certificate would be posted to your home address. Please note that if you choose this option, you will not normally have the opportunity to attend a future ceremony in person.

Check your address

When you register to graduate, you will have the opportunity to amend your address to ensure that we send your degree certificate to the correct address.  Please note if you do not complete the online invitation your certificate will be posted to the home address currently held on your record. It is your responsibility to ensure that this information is correct.

How much is the fee?

For those graduating from June 2017 onwards, no fee is charged for the conferral of degrees. Therefore, as of 2017, students who successfully complete their programme of study will receive their degree certificate at no additional cost.  If you choose to attend a graduation ceremony, there is a charge of £50 which includes tickets for you and two guests, souvenir programmes and entry to the graduation reception.  There is no charge if you wish to graduate in absentia (see above for details).

Can I graduate if I have outstanding fees or other debts?

If you have not discharged all outstanding financial liabilities held with the University you may not be eligible to graduate. If you are experiencing difficulty making payment, please contact the Income Office on 01786 466699.

Should I wait until I know my exam results?

No, you should register your intention regardless of whether you know the outcome of your exams.

Guest tickets

How many tickets will I receive?

When you opt to graduate in person, you are entitled to two guest tickets to attend the ceremony and graduation reception, plus a ticket for you as the graduand. All tickets are collected on your graduation day, no tickets are sent out in advance.

When you complete your registration for graduation, it is important that you tell us the number of guest tickets you require – zero, one or two. Please choose the correct number when you register, as you will not be able to alter this after the deadline has passed. Note that all guests, including children, require a ticket to enter the Cathedral.

Can I apply for additional guest tickets?

The availability of additional guest tickets cannot be guaranteed.

After the deadline to register for graduation has passed, if additional tickets are available they will be sold online on a first-come, first-served basis. Demand for additional guest tickets can be high. If additional tickets are available, information about how to purchase them and when will be sent to your University email account.

As we cannot guarantee the supply of additional tickets, we advise that you do not make travel or accommodation arrangements for your guests until such time as you have purchased guest tickets for them.

How do I apply for additional tickets?

If additional tickets become available, information about how to purchase them and when will be sent to your University email account after the deadline to register for graduation has passed. The availability of additional guest tickets cannot be guaranteed.

When will I receive my tickets?

You will collect all tickets on the day of graduation from the Kenneth Street Hall.

What if I am unsuccessful and don’t receive any additional tickets for the ceremony?

As the availability of additional guest tickets cannot be guaranteed, we regret that it is not always possible for us to accommodate requests for additional tickets.

We are delighted to inform you that this year we have tickets available for the graduation reception only.

What if I wish to cancel my registration for graduation?

If, for any reason, you no longer wish to attend your forthcoming graduation ceremony, please refer below for your options.

Please note that if you have not fulfilled all academic requirements you may be ineligible  to graduate and any monies paid in respect of graduation will be carried forward. If you do not wish your graduation fee to be carried forward and wish to receive a refund please email ask@stir.ac.uk.

If you wish to graduate in absentia, please email ask@stir.ac.uk detailing your request. If your address has changed from what you have previously advised in the graduation invitation, please ensure you include your new address in your email.

On your graduation day: venues, ceremony and reception

What to do on graduation day

We use several venues for the graduation ceremony and reception: make sure you know where they all are in advance:

Kenneth Street Hall

Collect your academic gown and hood
Collect your seating card from the reception desk
Collect your guest tickets

Cathedral

Make your way to the Cathedral for the start of the ceremony. It is very important you occupy the correct seat within the Cathedral. Ushers will be in attendance to provide assistance. All graduands must be fully robed and in their seat 40 minutes before the start of the ceremony.

The Graduation Ceremony

Please remain seated until the Vice-Chancellor's procession enters, then rise with the rest of the audience and remain standing until the Vice-Chancellor invites you to be seated.

At the point when degrees are to be awarded, the marshals will ask the first graduands to take up a position in single file in the aisle. On the marshals' instructions you should walk, as your name is called, to be presented to the Vice-Chancellor who will cap each student in turn. At this point, please turn towards our graduation photographer, who will take an official photograph of you and the Principal.

You will then move on to receive your certificate from the Academic Registrar. You must then return to your original seat, following direction from the marshals.

At the close of the ceremony the assembly will rise and remain standing as the academic procession makes its way down the aisle. The graduates, on the instructions of the marshals, will then process out of the Cathedral. You will return to the main entrance where you disperse.

After the ceremony ends, please make your way to the Graduation Reception. Please retain your ticket as you will need it to gain access to the reception.

Graduation Reception

The reception will be held from 1.30-3.00pm in the Centre for Health Science, Inverness. Ede & Ravenscroft photography will be located in the ground floor seminar rooms for your graduation photographs and there will also be an opportunity to purchase graduation memorabilia.

Parking

The Cathedral, Inverness
There is a small (Council-owned) car-park to the rear of the Cathedral (payment required). Please note that no cars should be parked on the grass area surrounding the Cathedral. Please inform your guests.

The Centre for Health Science, Inverness
Car parking is available at the Centre for Health Science, but we suggest that guests share cars or use alternative modes of transport where possible. Guests should note that there is a £1 charge to use the car park and this should be exchanged for a parking token from the machine at the entrance to the Centre.

Personal belongings

Handbags etc should be left with parents or friends. Please do not leave personal belongings in the robing room since their security cannot be guaranteed. The marshals will not be able to look after students' belongings.
