Speaking of the Sky: Jon Schueler in Stirling

04 Apr ‘16

9.00AM - 5.00PM

Venue: Art Collection, Pathfoot Building, University of Stirling

Jon Schueler, American abstract expressionist who loved Scotland, would have been 100 this year. We celebrate his centenary with this exhibition Speaking of the Sky.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jon Schueler was a journalist before enlisting in the US Airforce in 1941.  The experience of extreme danger while navigating a B17 flying fortress, sitting in the clear plexiglas nose of the plane, surrounded by sky, was to have a powerful hold over him for the rest of his life. The Scottish Highlands too similarly fired his imagination. After the war, he studied art in San Francisco then in 1951 moved to New York where he established himself as one of the 'second generation' Abstract Expressionists. In the late fifties he fulfilled his dream to visit Scotland, staying in Mallaig for a winter and from 1970 onwards keeping a permanent base there and exhibiting successfully in Edinburgh and in the US.

Opening times: Monday to Friday 9am till 5pm, Open at the weekends by arrangement between 11am and 3pm.
