Reporting a wildlife incident

If you see an animal on campus which you believe to be in distress please contact the SSPCA's Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999 and they will be able to advise you on what should be done.

If they advise that they will come to the University to deal with the animal, please notify Security on extension 7003.

Bats

If you come across a bat, please contact Kirsty Park by phoning 01786 467799 and emailing k.j.park@stir.ac.uk

If Kirsty is not available you can contact the BES office –467841/467840

If the bat is flying:

  • Close the door to the room and open the windows to the outside as widely as possible
  • Dim the lights if it’s evening
  • This will give the bat a chance to find its own way out.
  • Close the window once the bat has found its way out.

If the bat has landed or is found on the ground:

  • Put on a pair of gloves
  • Contain the bat by putting a box over it
  • Call Kirsty/ BES and try and keep an eye on the bat until someone arrives
  • If nobody is available, release the bat as close to dusk as possible – preferably release from (a gloved) hand so that it flies off. Failing this, hang in a tree as high up as possible.

Do not pick up any bat without wearing gloves.
