Group Finance Director, Robertson Group
Describe your career history to date:
I joined the Bank of Scotland as a Graduate Trainee and completed both CIOBS exams and qualified as a CA (worked in branch, internal audit, personal and corporate tax, accounting and relationship banking). I then moved into Acquisition and Integrated Finance at the Bank of Scotland (3 years experience) and then moved to RBS, heading up Structured Finance teams in both Glasgow and Aberdeen. I moved to Quayle Munro as Managing Director running a Debt Advisory and Scottish Corporate Finance advisory business. In January 2012 I joined the Robertson Group as Group Finance Director.
What attracted you to your current career?
It was a move into the construction industry which I had an interest in, and also to be more involved in running a company. The fact that I was going to be working for a Group with a diverse range of businesses was also an attraction.
How did you get into your current job?
I was approached by a recruitment head hunter firm.
Describe what your current job involves:
I am responsible for the finances of Robertson Group and 6 operating companies. Robertson Group employees c1100 employees in Scotland and England, and I am responsible for leading a team of 36 in the various finance teams across the Group. As a group board member I am heavily involved with Group strategy as well as my FD duties of funding, cash management, budget setting, management and audit accounts review and preparation.
Describe a typical working day:
There is no typical day. I spend 7 days a month in board meetings which is the only part of routine I have – but I can safely say there is no typical day format.
In what way did your time at Stirling shape your career to date?
My economics degree was very useful for my entire career as when you are looking at strategy you need to have grasp of macro and micro economics, demand & supply and market forces.

What advice would you give to current students in terms of preparing for life after graduation?
Professional qualifications are a fantastic thing gained post University. I would recommend doing a CA qualification.
