What courses are on offer?

INTO University of Stirling currently offers the following courses here on campus:

12 week Pre-sessional English course (June to August): designed to improve your IELTS score by 1.0 in one or more skills.

6 week Pre-sessional English course (July to August): designed to improve your IELTS score by 0.5 in one or more skills.

3 week Pre-sessional English course (August): suited to students who already hold an unconditional offer at Stirling and would like to brush up on their English language skills.

When can I start?

To reserve your space on one of INTO University of Stirling’s 2017 Pre-sessional English courses, you will need to register by the following deadlines:

How do I qualify?

Academic requirements: Applicants must hold an offer of a place on a degree programme at the University of Stirling.

English requirements: Applicants must provide an official IELTS test score. The Centre can only accept a UKVI approved IELTS test for this course. Required IELTS scores may vary for different degree programme. Specific score requirements can be found below.

To progress to a degree programme that requires IELTS 6.5

With a minimum of 6.5 in reading and writing:

  • 12 week course: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in reading and writing and 5.0 in listening and speaking)
  • 6 week course: IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 6.0 in reading and writing and 5.5 in listening and speaking)  

With a minimum of 6.0 in all subskills:

  • 12 week course: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in writing and 5.0 in all other subskills)
  • 6 week course: IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in all other subskills)

With a minimum of 5.5 in all subskills:

  • 12 week course: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in writing and no less than 4.5 in any subskill)
  • 6 week course: IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in writing and no less than 5.0 in any subskill)
To progress to a degree programme that requires IELTS 6.0

With a minimum of 5.5 in all subskills:

  • 12 week course: IELTS 5.0 (with a minimum of 5.0 in writing and 4.5 in all other subskills)
  • 6 week course: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in writing and 5.0 in all other subskills)  

If you apply for the Pre-sessional English programme and the only outstanding condition for your degree programme is English language (or if you are holding an unconditional offer), the University of Stirling will automatically issue you with a joint Confirmation of Acceptance (CAS), provided you meet the Pre-sessional English course entry requirements. This allows you to obtain one student visa to cover both programmes.

Pre-sessional courses are useful for students who are already academically qualified, but need to improve their English skills before starting undergraduate or postgraduate study. By completing a course suited to your requirements, you'll fulfil the English language condition of your offer, allowing you to progress to your degree.
