Dr Andrea Schapper, Lecturer in Politics

My research focuses on the relationship between climate change and human rights. I am interested in the rights impacts of both, climate change consequences and climate policies. Currently, I am investigating how transnational advocacy networks bring local rights concerns to the international climate negotiations in order to institutionalize human rights in the climate regime.

My monograph From the Global to the Local: How International Rights Reach Bangladesh’s Children was published in 2014 with Routledge (paperback in 2015). Furthermore, I have published articles in Human Rights Quarterly (manuscript accepted), the Journal of International Relations and Development, and the Journal of Human Security. Specifically on the relationship between climate change and human rights, I have published articles (and a special journal issue) in International Environmental Agreements: Politics, Law and Economics and the Cambridge Review of International Affairs.

Prior to joining the University of Stirling in 2015, I was a Lecturer in International Relations at the Technische Universität Darmstadt in Germany (2012-2015). My PhD is from the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (Universität Bremen, 2011) and I have previously studied at Cornell University (USA), Leibniz Universität Hannover (Germany) and the United Nations Office at Geneva (United Nations Graduate Study Program, Switzerland). I have also worked for international organizations, like the International Labour Organization (ILO in Geneva, Switzerland), and non-governmental organizations, such as the National Domestic Workers' Movement (India) or the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation (Zambia). I have also conducted field research in Bangladesh, India, Ethiopia and Zambia.

Since 2012, I have been one of the co-chairs of the Human Rights Working Group of the German Political Science Association.
