The Historic Rural Settlement Discussion Group exists to give all those interested a chance to meet, exchange information, and discuss the future of historic rural settlement remains and the subject in general. Discussion Group meetings are held once a year and are open to everyone. The meetings are held in a different location each time, and in recent years we have met in Biggar, Perth, Inveraray, Braemar and at the Highland Folk Park in Newtonmore.
The morning session of the meeting is normally given over to short talks. These focus on projects being undertaken in the local area, but also cover more general topics such as the archive resources available for documentary research or the funding opportunities for historic settlement related work. Speakers include both non-professionals (whether from local archaeology and history societies or individual researchers) and professionals (such as regional archive or museum staff, professional archaeologists, historians, and environmental scientists who have been working in the region). The talks often generate a lot of interest and are followed by plenty of questions and discussion.
The afternoon part of the meeting normally involves a trip to a relevant site or museum in the vicinity. In the past, we have toured the Highland Folk Park in Strathspey, visited the Glenochar bastle house and fermtoun, and explored the Auchindrain township open-air museum. These visits, each led by someone who has either excavated at the site or is on the museum staff there, have allowed a relaxed forum for the discussion to continue and a great chance to meet new people with a similar interest in Scotland’s rural past.
