Who was your internship with?

My internship was with Labels4Kids.  It is an award winning e-commerce business that provides personalised name labels and gifts to families all over the world. Having won ‘International Online Retailer of the Year’ in the children’s category 4 years running, the primary focus is on parents of 0-12 year olds, but Labels4kids also does commercial labelling for companies and care homes. 

How did you find out about the internship?

Label4Kids visited the Careers and Employability Service's  ‘Work Fest’ and ‘This is Your Life’ careers fairs in the Atrium.  I spoke with them twice and decided to apply as they were looking for bi-lingual university students.  Labels4Kids advertised their paid summer internship through The Stirling Internship Programme.

What do you see as the benefits of an internship with a smaller organisation?

It made it a lot easier to see how the business functions as a whole; what challenges  e-commerce faces and how people can come together via teamwork to tackle those challenges.  Being so close to the everyday operations enabled me to learn a lot very quickly about the labelling industry.  It also led to me staying with the business working part-time after my internship was finished.

How do you think the internship has helped towards planning your future career?

My internship has given me a good taste of the 9-5 work routine.  It has also given me a head start in my marketing career by providing me with lots of valuable experiences from very early on.  When I graduate in 2017, I will already have significant levels of work experience, much of which I can attribute to this internship with Labels4Kids.

What did you enjoy most about the internship?

The sheer range of tasks and responsibilities and projects I got to work on was extremely rewarding.  I found myself working with production, printing and packaging of name labels, customer service, web development, translation work and planning and executing the digital marketing for Labels4Kids.  It has given me a much better idea of how well I would function in a job that involves a lot of customer service, or an in-house digital marketing role.

What skills do you feel you gained from the internship experience?

Teamwork, teamwork, teamwork!  Having worked in an office for the first time in my life, full-time for 3 months, it has been such an important and eye-opening experience into the world of teamwork in a professional workplace.  It is important to be adaptable, but also very clear and always honest with your colleagues.  Always be helpful, and see things from their perspective as a way of moving forward together as one.  Besides this, I feel like this internship has developed my digital marketing skills, copywriting, graphic design and customer service skills.

What advice would you give students considering applying for an internship through this programme next year?

Be open to opportunities, even though the company you applied for might be in an industry you do not know too much about.  I remember being excited about my internship, but a bit hesitant at how fun the name label business could be.  Now I realise that there are so many exciting and interesting parts of “behind the scenes” of every e-commerce site.  It has been a real eye-opener for me, and I cannot wait to work more with e-commerce and digital businesses after having completed this internship. 

Please summarise your experience as an intern.

It has been a great, “eye opening” and extremely rewarding experience. It has also given me a tremendous head start in the life of work and in my marketing career.
