Art Collection

Stay Blue painting The Art Collection at the University is a varied one comprising over 350 works including paintings, sketches, tapestries, sculpture and silver.

History

The tradition of collecting art at the University goes back to its Foundation in 1967 when Professor Tom Cottrell was the first Principal. A scientist by training, he came from an artistic background and had very clear ideas about art and its place in society. He felt that art should be part of the everyday experience at the University and it is his philosophy that has been driving and inspiring the University to continue collecting and showing exciting art to the public.

Full Registered Museum Status

The Art Collection has Full Registered Museum Status with Resource and many of its most important pieces are housed in the Pathfoot Concourse Gallery. The J.D. Fergusson Memorial Collection, the Cottrell Memorial tapestry and the Scottish Arts Council Bequest (shown on this page is the piece from the collection Stay Blue by Olivia Irvine) are shown here alongside other major pieces including works by Hepworth, Wyllie, Paolozzi, Eardley, McTaggart, Redpath, Blackadder, Bellany and Morocco.

Dispersed works

There is also a dispersed element to the Collection so you will find other works of art throughout the buildings and the surrounding parkland making our beautiful campus an ever more interesting place to work, study and play in.
