The University is committed to the highest standards of sustainable design and the delivery of environmentally sustainable, low energy buildings is a key consideration for this project.
The new accommodation aspires to achieve a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) excellent environmental performance rating and to achieve performance standards which exceed those of the Building Regulations.
BREEAM sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation and has become one of the most comprehensive and widely recognised holistic measures of a building's environmental performance.
The majority of the on-campus student accommodation is served by a district heating main which is recognised to be energy efficient. In parallel with the project to create new accommodation we are looking at the fuel used to support the heating main, in the interest of lower utility consumption and carbon emissions.
Students will be provided with information on energy and water consumption in their new accommodation to encourage an understanding of how they can be more energy efficient.
