University and Residences Facilities

murray hall social area

Residential Services provides excellent facilities for students at the University of Stirling, both with our on-campus and off-campus residences.

First Year students are also encouraged to become involved in the Halls Social Committees. These committees are responsible, with the Accommodation Liaison Students, for organising social events for the residents of the Halls. Involvement is extremely fulfilling, and although the work never exceeds a few hours a week, you can gain invaluable experience in representing students, teamworking and organising events.

Laundry Facilities

The University of Stirling has various laundry facilities located in A K Davidson Hall, Murray Hall, Alexander Court, Spittal Hill, John Forty’s Court, Thistle Chambers, Union Street development Stirling and in Polwarth House, central to the main residences complex. All have card operated washers and dryers.

In the main laundry at Polwarth House, £4 buys a 12 point laundry card, which is swiped in the machines as they are used. Washes “cost” four points, and 20 minutes in the dryer “costs” two points, so each card holds the equivalent of three washes, or six dries, or two of each.

TV Rooms

The four Halls of Residence have Wide-screen Televisions with VCR-DVD Combo machines. These are fitted to an overhead bracket in a TV room in each residence, the largest of which will seat up to around 50 people.

Residents of the Halls are welcome to use these TV rooms, and the Accommodation Liaison Students frequently organise video nights showing the latest releases from local movie rental stores.

Games Rooms

All Halls of Residence have games rooms with pool tables and table tennis. All Halls also have a compilation of board games suggested by last years’ residents.

Social Activities

All Halls of Residence operate Hall Social Committees. These are led by the Accommodation Liaison Students and are responsible for organising the social calendar for the halls.

In recent years in Murray Hall for example, the Hall Social Committee organized four highly successful events – a Halloween party, Christmas party, Valentines dance, and the year’s finale was a ceilidh/disco, with champagne reception, held in the ballroom of Stirling’s Golden Lion Hotel.

Phones

Payphones are available in the Halls of Residence. Payphones are also available in the Atrium, outside the library. All students are free to use these facilities as they wish.

Vending Machines

Juice and confectionery vending machines are supplied in the Halls of Residence, and in the covered areas outside the Flats on the campus. The chalets do not, however, have vending machines, although Pendreich Way is only a short walk from ASH, and Spittal Hill is close to the amenities in the small village of Causewayhead, including bars, an Italian restaurant and takeaway, and a small supermarket.

Internet Connections

The University has wireless network access in the Library and the Atrium and Student Union.

Network points have been fitted in all bedrooms with the exception of 9 Union Street, Bridge of Allan

Computer Labs

The University has fitted the Matthew Nelson Lab in Murray Hall. This special needs computer lab is dedicated to people with disability or learning difficulties. The lab was fitted in the Hall in an attempt to make access easier for disabled students – Murray Hall is at the centre of the residences complex.

Bicycle Lock-up areas

Following a recent investigation into transport in and around the University, new bicycle lockup facilities have been built around the campus, and a special free-of-charge membership to the Sports Centre is available for students and staff who cycle to the University, allowing access to showers in the morning – giving you the opportunity to freshen up before you go to work/lectures.
