Marketing consultancy opportunities via integrated projects to course modules. The modules enable groups of 6 or 7 students to be assigned to the investigation of a particular marketing topic currently facing an individual organisation. At the end of the 12 week period the organisation will receive a written report and a group presentation on the conclusions and recommendations of their investigation. This provides a unique opportunity to achieve highly cost-effective marketing analysis and understanding in today’s more stringent business environment. Opportunities begin at the start of both the Spring (mid-Feb) and Autumn (mid-Sept) semester.

The Marine Environmental Research Laboratory is a purpose built, aquaculture research facility located at Machrihanish in Kintyre on the west coast of Scotland. The facility provides contract research services and hire of facilities to industry and academic institutions and supports research and teaching at the Institute of Aquaculture.

Operated as a commercial fishery since 1881, Howietoun near Stirling is one of the oldest fish farms in Scotland. Brown trout hatched at Howietoun have been stocked for angling throughout the world and are famous for their quality. In 1979, the farm was acquired by the University of Stirling and it has continued to apply new technologies to the best traditions of aquaculture. Both brown trout and Atlantic salmon smolts are available from Howietoun.

EvoFIT is a facial composite system, used by police to help witnesses to a crime create a likeness of the face of the perpetrator. It is being marketed by colleagues in the University of Central Lancashire.

The unit is gravity fed from the nearby Buckieburn reservoir, which provides over two million gallons a day of temperature stable water. The facility has a total of seventy-four flow-through tanks ranging from 600 to 25000 litres in volume and is ideally suited for research on salmonids, principally Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout.

CRESS was set-up in March 2005 to develop an enhanced research capability centred on Scottish river ecosystems and meet a demand for scientifically informed river survey, monitoring and assessment to accommodate the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC). CRESS has expertise relating to various components of the ecosystem: channel, hyporheos, riparian and floodplain sub-systems. We are known internationally for our work in aquatic ecology, fluvial geomorphology and remote sensing of rivers.

Stirling Aquaculture is the consulting arm of the Institute of Aquaculture. It makes more readily available the expertise and experience of the Institute to other organisations. Stirling Aquaculture conducts opportunity and feasibility studies; due diligence and expert opinion; economic and foresight reviews; support to project development.

Aquaculture fish feed, aquafeed, fish farming and processing, agricultural and food production. The Nutrition Analytical Service was created in 1998 as the commercial arm of the Lipid Nutrition Group at the Institute of Aquaculture. The NAS and Lipid Nutrition Group possess a wide range of analytical skills that provide advice and analysis to the aquafeed, fish farming and processing, agricultural and food producing sectors.

The reproduction group offers analytical, consultancy and advice services to monitor growth, reproduction and development (smoltification) of a range of species. Services include blood hormonal analyses, ultrasound, X-Ray,lighting system deployment, gill ATPase, osmolality and chloride.

The Tropical Aquarium can supply certified disease free broodstock fish of several different Tilapia and Catfish species for commercial hatcheries or research. We can also supply The Stirling Red O.niloticus strain as mixed sex fry. We have an agreement (FishGen) to supply red YYmale and XX female broodstock to generate all-male fry. The Aquarium can also supply Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) lines of Zebra danio (Microbacteria). We have facilities to undertake warm water feed trials.

The Thin Section and Micromorphology team offer a well established service for the production of thin section slides. Slides are produced from a wide range of materials, mainly soils, rocks, sediments and vegetation such as roots amongst other materials. We have particular expertise in thin section micromorphology and analyses from archaeological sites and historic landscapes, ranging from UNESCO World Heritage Sites to local development control cases, and applied to the interpretation of cultural heritage.

The Environmental Radioactivity Laboratory (ERL) is ISO 17025 accredited for the environmental sampling, sample preparation and laboratory analysis of radioactivity through gamma ray spectrometry. The laboratory undertakes national and international research. We collaborate with and provide analytical services for academic, public and private sector organisations and are also involved in knowledge transfer and training.

Provide an accredited module in Preventing Homelessness (a key Scottish Government Agenda within housing and linking to the general Scottish government outcome of early intervention).This has been delivered as a bespoke module for four local authorities. The Unit will be offering a further module open to general application starting in September 2011. The Unit will also be offering a new 2-day face to face course on the new Housing Act in November 2011. This will be followed in early 2012 with a full 6-session accredited CPD module in Housing Law. A 2-day course for housing professionals on recognising dementia amongst applicants and service users and a fully accredited module in housing for older people are currently being developed.
