A major Research Grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Board in 2002, and again in 2005, was awarded to the late Professor Emeritus Douglas Mack of the University of Stirling, founding General Editor of the Stirling/South Carolina Research Edition of the Collected Works of James Hogg. From 2009, the general editorship has been jointly shared by Dr Suzanne Gilbert (Stirling) and Professor Ian Duncan (Berkeley). In collaboration with the University of South Carolina, the S/SC Research Edition aims to publish Hogg's prose, his poetry, his plays, and his letters. When complete, the Edition will run to thirty-nine volumes.

Volumes are numbered in the order of their publication in the Stirling / South Carolina Research Edition.
