Liam McCabe

Director of Finance and Interim Director of Estates and Campus Services

Liam McCabe joined the University as Director of Finance in 2009.

He has over 20 years’ experience working in and around higher education across the UK.  Immediately prior to joining the University, Liam was a Senior Director for five years at Queen Margaret University as in Edinburgh.  Before that he had 10 years with Scottish Funding Councils and its predecessor bodies latterly as Director of Governance and Management:  Appraisal and Policy (GMAP).  A graduate of the University in Accounting and Business Law in 1981, Liam qualified as an accountant (CPFA) in 1986 and has almost 30 years post qualified experience. 

As the University’s Finance Director, Liam’s role at Stirling is to advise the Principal and his senior team and through that the University Court on the University’s strategic financial direction.  Liam has a lead role in the development of the University’s financial strategy as well as overseeing its implementation.  One particular aspect of this has been securing the funds required to undertake the redevelopment of the University’s residential estate entailing borrowing of c. £40 million.  On a day to day basis, Liam is responsible for the operation management and strategic direction of the Finance Office including Procurement Services. Liam is a non-executive director of Advanced Procurement Universities and Colleges (APUC) Ltd a body set up to lead and developments strategic and collaborative developments in procurement practice in the Scottish further and higher education sectors.  He is also a Board member of Forth Valley College and Chair of the College’s Finance Committee. 

Outside of the education sphere, Liam is a Lay Member of the Council of the Law Society of Scotland and is Convenor of the Society’s Audit Committee. Liam a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA)
