Steve Burt graduated from the University of Oxford with a BA in Geography. He started his PhD at the University of Wales, before moving to Stirling with his supervisor in 1983. Since then he has held various posts at Stirling including Director of the Institute for Retail Studies.

Outside the University he is a visiting Professor at Lund University in Sweden, and at IGR-IAE, University of Rennes in France, and is also President of the European Association for Education and Research in Commercial Distribution (an association for academics researching and teaching retailing).

His academic and research interests lie in the field of retailing. Specific interests include the patterns and processes of retail internationalisation; the implications of international retailing for structural change; the role of branding within the internationalisation process; and failure and divestment in international retailing. This research pursued with colleagues at Stirling and in Europe has been funded by a range of commercial and public agencies including the ESRC, European Commission and the DTI.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning and overseeing the implementation of the University’s strategic objectives and School plans
  • Budget setting process and resource allocation
  • Line manager and appraiser for Heads of School
  • Oversees HR policy development particularly with respect to academic staffing issues
  • Safety management
  • Budget setting process and resource allocation
  • Recruitment and admissions strategy and policy

The Deputy Principal (Academic Operations, Strategy & Resources is currently also the Senior Deputy Principal.  The role of Senior Deputy Principal includes assuming full delegated responsibility in the absence of the Principal.
