Chairman of the University Court

Alan Simpson took up office as Chair of University Court in 2007 and was previously a member of Court for a number of years.

He was born in Edinburgh and studied Engineering Science and Economics at Magdalen College, Oxford where he gained a scholarship. He then qualified as a Civil Engineer. Initially he worked with Brian Colquhoun and Partners in London and the Middle East and then returned to Scotland to work as a consulting engineer with W A Fairhurst and Partners, becoming a Partner in 1989. He retired in 2009.

Alan’s other interests include music and he is Chairman of the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland. He has served as a member of Council of the Institution of Civil Engineers and is currently Vice-chairman of ICE Scotland. He chairs the Committee of the Scottish Chairs of Higher Education Institutions and is a Deputy Lieutenant for Stirling and Falkirk. Sporting and outdoor activities include skiing, gardening and archery.
